Espresso Machine & Grinder Cleaning Guide — Daily/Weekly/Monthly

How do I clean my espresso machine?

Espresso equipment is low-maintenance if you keep up with small daily habits. Neglect it for a month and fixes get expensive.

Daily (2–3 minutes)

  • After your last shot: knock the puck out, wipe the group head gasket with a damp cloth, purge the steam wand, wipe the wand tip with a clean cloth.
  • Grinder: tap the chute clear, brush any visible grounds off the burr chamber top. Never rinse grinder parts with water.

Weekly (10 minutes)

  • Backflush the machine with a blank basket and a small pinch of Cafiza (or equivalent) — 10-second bursts, five cycles, then rinse cycles until water runs clear.
  • Wipe the drip tray and grate with warm water + mild detergent.
  • Descale reminder check — depending on your water hardness, descale every 1–3 months. Use a coffee-machine-safe descaler, never household vinegar on aluminium boilers.

Monthly (15 minutes)

  • Deep-clean the portafilter basket — soak in Cafiza solution for 15 minutes.
  • Check the shower screen and rinse the group head dispersion plate.
  • Grinder burr cleaning — run 2–3 "grinder cleaning tablets" (e.g. Urnex Grindz) through to clear buildup, then grind a throwaway dose of coffee to flush.

Cleaning materials we recommend: Cafiza (backflush), Urnex Grindz (grinder), Durgol (descaler for aluminium-safe). Available from any specialty coffee supplier in India.
